Welcome From the Board of Supervisors

As Chair of the Lee County Board of Supervisors I am very proud to represent the citizens of our county. We have an interesting history that goes back to the very beginning of our state. We are the southern most county and at times are referred to as the Florida of Iowa. We are centrally located between several larger cities such as Des Moines, Chicago and St. Louis.

We have the only duel county seats in Iowa in Fort Madison and Keokuk. The North Lee County Courthouse is the oldest in the state in continuous use. The South Lee Courthouse was completed in July of 1889 and first served as Keokuk’s Post Office. When built it was the most elegant of federal buildings in the nation. It was purchased by Lee County in 1980 and has since been renovated to preserve its original beauty.

Lee County has a strong industrial base. Business and Industry thrive because of our transportation infrastructure and our high quality workforce. Barge, rail, air and an efficient highway system serve the area giving us access to major markets that few counties enjoy.

Lee County has a strong commitment to education. We have three public school systems; Central Lee, Keokuk and Fort Madison Community School Districts. We have two parochial school systems. Southeastern Community College has a campus in Keokuk and a class center in Fort Madison.

Throughout the year we host many special events and festivals. These include the Pea Ridge Reenactment and Eagle Days in Keokuk. Balloons Over the Mississippi, the Tri-State Rodeo and the Mexican Fiesta are held each year in Fort Madison. The Sweet Corn Festival is held in West Point the second weekend in August; Montrose has the Watermelon Festival the last weekend in August and the Lee County Fair and Apple Days are held annually in Donnellson.

I encourage everyone to enjoy all that Lee County has to offer. While here please drive the relaxing and scenic view of the River Road that stretches along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River and experience the warm hospitality and friendliness of our citizens. Visit us - you won’t be disappointed.

Sincerely,

Janet Fife-LaFrenz
Chair- Lee County Board of Supervisors
