Where do I get a 911
map of Lee County?
911 maps are available in the Auditor's office in Fort Madison or the Recorder's
Office in Keokuk. Cost - $3.00 each.

Why did my taxes go up?
Taxes go up for a number of reasons. You should check with the various taxing
bodies to which you pay taxes....the county board of supervisors, the city, the
school district.

How do I know if my deed should be recorded at the North or South Lee
County Courthouse?
The line that separates north and south Lee County follows the Sullivan Line
from the west edge of the county to the southeast corner of section four in
Jefferson Township. The line then follows the section line south to the center
of the section thirty-three east section line in Jefferson Township, then goes
east to the Mississippi River. (Note: The Sullivan Line is the continuation of
the south border of the State of Iowa)

What do I need to
get a marriage license?
Get an Application to Marry in Iowa from the Recorder’s office. The application
will need to be completed by the two parties and a disinterested person (any
adult who knows both parties). The application must be signed in
front of a notary public. Recorder’s office personnel are notaries, so bring a
picture ID. The fee is $35.00 payable to the Lee County Recorder.

Where can I get
a copy of my birth certificate?
If you were born in Lee County before 1921 or after 1941, the Lee County
Recorder can provide a copy of your birth certificate. The Iowa Department of
Public Health has birth records for everyone born in Iowa.

What do I need to register
my boat?
You may register your boat in the Recorder's office. For a new boat, you will
need the manufacture's certificate of origin and the bill of sale. For a used
boat, you will need the proof of registration (and title, if applicable) signed
over to you by the previous owner. A bill of sale is also required.

How long is a
marriage application valid?
You must apply for a marriage certificate in the Recorder's office. Following
application, you will need to return to pick up the application and certificate.
The Recorder's office will hold your marriage application and certificate for
six months. If you pick up your certificate within the six months, it is valid
forever. Certificates not picked up within six months are destroyed and no
longer valid.
How do I change my name
on a property?
In most situations, a new deed will need to be prepared and recorded at the
Recorder's office.

What does it
cost to record a deed and mortgage?
Deeds and mortgages are recorded at the Recorder's office. The standard
recording fee is $5.00 per page that is filmed, plus $4.00 per document. A deed
will also require an Auditor's Transfer fee of $5.00 per parcel and a real
estate transfer stamp based on the selling price of the property.

I want
to put in a new driveway. What do I need to do?
Complete an Entrance Application form, which is available at the County
Engineer's office, 933 Avenue H, Fort Madison. The application form must be
signed by the landowner and indicate where the entrance will be built. The
landowner will then need to mark the location of the proposed entrance and the
Engineer will examine the site to determine the necessary size entrance pipe.
Once the permit is approved, a signed copy will be mailed to you indicating the
cost of the culvert and any installation charge. Once the culvert charge has
been paid, a foreman will schedule the installation.

In general, in order to receive services funded by Lee County, the person to be
served must have legal settlement in Lee County.
